• VLC 2.0 Released

The folks at VideoLAN have released version 2.0 of the VLC media player for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Code-named "Twoflower", this release is a significant rewrite that promises a large number of new features and enhancements.

The Windows and Linux versions continue with essentially the same interface but the Mac version has a completely new UI to better integrate with Lion.

There are numerous new formats and codecs supported, and the player should perform much better with multi-core processors, GPU-supported computers and mobile devices.

Experimental support for Blu-ray is another notable feature. It's a bit limited (e.g. no menus) and my initial tests were complete failures, but it's early days. If you're keen to get under the hood and tweak it to play commercial Blu-ray DVDs, I did find some instructions but I haven't tested them.

There are dozens more changes in this version - see the list at www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/2.0.0.html
