• A Plea for 35mm Film

    I love almost everything about digital filmmaking and to be honest, I've been looking forward to the day that it takes over from film. That's not to dismiss the advantages of film but I just feel that the benefits of digital outweigh those of film.

    We're now living in the uncomfortable period where the two formats both need to live in the same world. Inevitably there will be casualties. While digital production and distribution is ultimately more efficient and green, there is (or should be) a place for film. However, as Gendy Alimurung reports in the LA Weekly, some filmmakers and cinema owners are feeling bullied into going digital at the expense of being able to make and show traditional film.

    So how does this affect cinemas that show a lot of art-house and classic films? How do they get access to these films and how do they show them?
