• Sony's First Blu-ray 3D Player

Sony has announced the release of the BDP-S470, the company's first 3D-ready Blu-ray disc player. This and a few previous models (BDP-S570, BDV-E770W and BDV-E570) play traditional 2D Blu-ray and will be upgradable to include 3D support via a firmware update which will be released later this year.

Sony 3D players can connect to the Internet and stream content from major video services such as Youtube, Netflix, Amazon, Sony and many more.

The new models can be controlled by iPhone and iPod touch devices with a free app called "B D Remote".

Blu-ray is still struggling to gain traction, with many consumers unconvinced that HD is worth spending big money on. Love it or hate it, 3D is more of an obvious technology development than HD and it's likely to have much more novelty value. At the very reasonable price of $200, the BDP-S470 may be appealing enough to give the whole Blu-ray platform a welcome boost.
