"We will be able to live to 1,000"

An interesting article about one geneticist's predictions:

Can this really happen? It seems a bit far-fetched.

Re: "We will be able to live to 1,000"

    My best guess:
Within the next generation: Unlikely but possible
Within 2 or 3 generations: Quite possible, maybe 50/50
Within a few hundred years: Quite likely, 75% chance that many people will live to be several hundred years old.

It does appear that the only reason we age is that we're genetically programmed to do so. Apart form the pre-programmed aging process there is nothing inherent about our design that can't last for centuries if we're careful.

The point is that if it's even remotely possible we should be preparing. This is potentially the greatest threat facing the planet. Can you imagine the chaos if everyone could live for hundreds of years? The population is already at the point where many scientists think it's unsustainable.

I see all sorts of preparations for Bird Flu and other diseases. Personally I'm more worried about things which make people live longer than things which kill them.

A moderately humourous take on this issue published today at wired.com:
