How do I save and use a transparent icon I created in photoshop?

I'm having a hell of a time saving and using a transparent icon that I created on Photoshop. I save the file and the icon still has the white background and when I click on it, it takes me back to photoshop. What I want to do is paste the transparent icon onto an untitled folder in OSX.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

now I have a black background.

I have made a transparent icon using photoshop. I figured out that I could drag the saved file to my preview application and did the cut and paste thing to an untitled folder. However now I have a black background (better than the white one). How do I make it so it is completely transparent? Thanks for any help.

here's an upload of what I did

Now I notice that when I click on the image on this page the image seems to be transparent. What I want to do is to paste this as an icon to a folder (MacOSX). When I do the old cut and past routine a black background shows up. What am I doing wrong?

What you might want to do is make a cliping path and save it as a gif.
