    Audio Tone?

Hello, I am about to be producing my first every over the air show.

In the past I have been the director & editor of the program.

Here is the line up. My question what audio tone or tones do I need to play during the bars? There are several different ones in the download section of this site, or does it really matter?

30 seconds of tones and bars.
    15 seconds of slate
    2 seconds of black screen
    < 30 minute video clip>
    2 seconds of black screen
    Thanks,
    Paul Wood

IMO it usually doesn't matter too much as long as the bars are not anything too non-standard. Bars and tone are are designed so that someone else can set up video levels etc to a known reference. As long as they know what type of bars you are using they should have no problem, and most technicians will recognise common types of bars.

For example, we usually use PAL 70% colour bars. When we set up new video sources we know what the bars should look like. Occasionally we'll get a source which uses 100% bars, but these are obvious and we just set them up a little differently. I'm sure if we got SMTPE bars or something else we'd know what to do with them.

Another thing to consider is to contact whoever is using your material and ask them what sort of bars they'd like. For example, if you are transmitting to a particular broadcaster, talk to their technical director (or duty staff in the Master Control Room) and ask them what they prefer.

As for tone, you can't go wrong with 1kHz.
