    Passive vs. Active Autofocus ?

I read that camcorders use a passive autofocus system in which the microprocessor searches the central portion of the image for the best focus. All of my Sony Handycams have a dark red plastic near the bottom of the front which I thought was where an infrared beam for autofocusing is emitted. In that case, it uses the active infrared system. Do different brands of camcorders use different focusing systems. I thought they all used infrared.

As far as I know all video camera auto-focus systems are passive. It sounds like you're looking at the remote control sensor. The manual should clarify this.

On my PV-GS150, the red/black shiny box houses the auto white balance and remote control IR sensors.
