    slow motion

I dont know what camera you are using..but I have a canon xl-1s and I am using FCP 5.0. If you increase your shutter speed for the particular scene you want to slow down you will get rid of the blurring you are speaking about. FCP using something like a cloning system to create extra frames that it can inturn use to fill the gaps when you slow a scene down. So you want a very sharp footage which is why you would want to increase teh shutter speed. hope it makes sence and helps you.
