    Photoshop locked background

Every time I make a new image file in Photoshop the background is locked and I can't do anything to it. It drives me nuts. How do you unlock it?

Double-click on the background in the layers palette. A window will appear asking for new layer properties. Click okay. This converts the background into an unlocked layer.

I'm not sure which version of Photoshop this started in but it works for version 7. Older versions may be a bit different.
