    Yes, photoshop does more than just still photo manipulation. A classmate of mine used it to illustrate, and boy was she good! Won a number of awards from tt.

    My colleague, a graphic designer does many things with it too. We'd try to spend least for maximum effects.

    As for GIMP, another colleague tried it but gave up. I'm not sure why, but it might be because he's too used to Photoshop.

    Speed, quality and control. Okay let's include cost.

    Oh I remember now. The Adobe program is Lightroom

    Just an additional point. The advantage to Lightroom and Aperture's that there are not only adjustment tools in the program (less then P.shop but sufficient if you have good experience with lights and taking pix) but the power's in their ability to manage and organize your photographs. Time is essence to photographic and print industry so these programs offers a different kind of workflow and process for the users who need just that.
