As I understand it, shaping refers to the process of taking a waveform and making it a different shape. In other words any treatment of the sound such as distortion, tonal adjustment, etc. In fact I've known certain pedants who like to use the term "Tone Shaping" instead of "equalization".

A lot of audio software includes shaping tools which allow you to see a graphical representation of the audio waveform and manipulate it (for example, by clicking and dragging).

My suggestion for two types of shaping equipment would be a graphic equalizer and a distortion pedal.

Shaping isn't really I term I use myself so I hope my explanation is accurate and not missing anything important. Hopefully someone else can confirm or deny.
