What he fails to appreciate is that the years they have spent stalling, keeping people in the dark and refusing to accept help has left them with no-one who cares.
Man, in the dark? That's an understatement! I should have been on vBulletin two years ago!

I now have a seamless CHAT ROOM inside my forum!

PhotoPost or another look-alike is next.

Also, take a look at my Christmas style.

As you can tell, I am happier than the proverbial pig in the mud hole!

Vbulletin.org has been a major knowledge resource. (Count the posts on there compared to the WebBBS board!)

    P.S.

Lynne, you now have "Subscriber" status so you can peek at the Chat Room.

It's not open, nor does it show in the menu to Guests or Registered users.

Re: Harry & Howard: WebBBS, phpbb and vBulletin

    Dave,

Congrats on the BIG upgrade! I "know" you have spent long hours on making the move! It looks great, even in its early form.

You should see the Christmas skin I installed, but you'll need to register and log in to see it. When I see you are registered, I'll move you up to "subscriber" status so you can have a look at the chat rooms.

When you get ready to install a photo system, we should have a conflab. I've been watching vBAdvanced and vBGarage and of course, PhotoPost is always out there. I've heard that PhotoPost is difficult to integrate seamlessly into the board.

These long hours are getting to me! I should have stayed with broadcasting! Worked 35 years in AM, FM, TV, Satellite and Cable. I was with WKBW-TV before they bought ABC. :O Young and foolish, I went to work for a state university and spent 23 years with them. At least they had a good retirement progam.

Re: Harry & Howard: WebBBS, phpbb and vBulletin

Thanks Harry! I've just finished a few mods to the forum home page and I'm starting to feel like I'm getting on top of it.

This really isn't the way I'd planned to do this conversion, but the serious security hole found in phpbb forced my hand. I decided it would be easier to convert to vB than upgrade phpbb and have to redo all the mods I'd made.

Anyway, despite the panic and lack of sleep over the last 30 hours I'm glad it's happened. phpbb was struggling to cope even with the modest traffic this forum gets. It would be hopeless if/when this forum starts getting busy.

I've been meaning to come back and see how your forum is going. I promise I'll make the effort - I'm very keen to see how you're getting on. I'll do it as soon as I've finished this conversion.

I didn't realise you'd been in broadcasting. Interesting stuff.

We should certainly keep the lines of communication open.

I was in broadcasting when we used 2" Quad videotape by Ampex and RCA

    Some hints on vBulletin.

vbulletin.com is OK for stock support, but I found more answers at vbulletin.org and in fact google.com seems to grab subject material from anywhere and everywhere.

When searching a vbulletin board, always include the connector "and" between words. "This and that" will bring up threads with both "this" and "that" in them.

vbulletintemplates.com kinda' stinks, but they will ultimately merge with vbulletin.org

I'm using vbindex.com for a portal, but their rival vbadvanced.com may be better and they have a low cost non-branding option. You can find vbchat in vbulletin.org

My next step is photo posting. I contacted photopost.com about non-branding and they quoted $250 for that option on a $99 piece of software - no way. I suspect that vbadvanced.com will soon have a photo gallery option at a good price.

I don't do web pages with someone else blaring away at their "powered by" or copyright notices. The pages are mine - all mine.

Thanks for the tips Harry. It looks like I'm going to be stepping up my work with vBulletin so it helps to get a heads up.

I agree about the "powered by" tags. I hate 'em. Getting pages free of extraneous clutter is a challenge at the best of times without that stuff which is of no interest to my visitors and just uglifies my otherwise beautiful pages

Anyway, I checked out your Christmas theme - very groovy. It looks like things are going well over there.

On the antique engine topic, we've got a bit of a controversy going on in my town. The "Climax" steam engine which has been located in a park for years is falling apart and too expensive to restore. I'm told it has great historical significance. Last weekend it was removed from the park and put in storage. Lots of people are concerned about what happens to it but no one wants to pay to get it restored.

    Anyway, I digress.

If you want your attachments to open into a NEW window rather than have the user use the back button and consume bandwidth:

    Code:
    <a href="attachment.php?$session[sessionurl]attachmentid=$attachment[attachmentid]" target="_blank"><img class="thumbnail" src="attachment.php?$session[sessionurl]attachmentid=$attachment[attachmentid]&amp;stc=1&amp;thumb=1" border="0" alt="<phrase 1="$attachment[filename]" 2="$attachment[counter]" 3="$attachment[filesize]">$vbphrase[image_larger_version_x_y_z]</phrase>" /></a>
    &nbsp;<if condition="$show['br']"><br /><br /></if>
In template postbit_attachmentthumbnail check the target="_blank" above.

    hmmmm...

I thought I was subscribed to this thread, but I guess not... .

Didn't realize all this conversation was going on!

Came here to take a look after John posted a link to your article on WebBBS. Which, I am sad to say, I agree with.

Hey, I'm putting in the mods you mentioned in that article. Guess I'm just a dinosaur.. But then, I have such a small following on my forums, I don't have to worry about server load... and they are non-revenue forums.

Actually, I am thinking of converting the forum on my own website forum to phpbb. The WJHosting has a limit on the number of files and I go over the number of files with WebBBS all the time (one file per post), even though I have plenty of room on the site. Wouldn't have that problem with phpbb. But then, I probably wouldn't be able to decorate for Christmas... although it is a bit of a task to do styling with WebBBS. It helps that I am using Tarty's fully modded version, but even with that, I style something on one page, and it looks funny on the next page. Oh well, it will only be up for the holidays.

As far as the AV forum, we set up a separate forum with just posts that we thought we would like searched, those posts with information we thought would be interesting - and I am having a devil of a time getting it picked up by google, even though it is defined as search friendly. And if you look at some of the webbbs sites, you will find the archives are not indexed fully on most of them. If I can't figure it out, I will probably recommend we convert that one public archive to phpbb. But the people like the AV forum the way it is. And that is also low volume. so, not a problem.
