Apologies for the lack of action. As always I'm way behind on what I want to get done.

It looks like there's enough support to give this a try - thanks guys. I'll have to give some though as to how this could be structured - if it's going to fit into the forum system there may be some limitations. Maybe I'll investigate a few review scripts and see if they would work well for us.

Quick update: I've been looking at ways to implement a review system. I'm not in a position to create such a system myself from the ground up (that would be re-inventing the wheel anyway) so I'm on the lookout for a third-party review script to install on this website.

Ideally I'd like something that could interface with the existing forum database so we wouldn't need a separate login system for posting and managing reviews. Unfortunately I could only find one ready-made solution and I'm a bit wary of it - it's still under development.

If we're happy to have a separate login system for reviews the options get better. I'm still a little disappointed in the small number of available solutions but a couple of them could work well enough for now.

In case you're interested, the two options that look best so far are Dan Grossman's Wordpress plugin and 5-Star Review Script.

If any of you guys would like to offer opinions on any of this, I'm all ears. If you're really keen to help you might like to troll through the review scripts at hotsripts.com and see if you can shortlist a few.

BTW I can afford up to a couple of hundred dollars (USD) for a solution. There's a bit of money in the donation box at the moment for exactly this type of expense.

    dave,

If i had to pick i would go with the 5star product. It may not be as advanced, but i would assume easier, and after all, we all know that is what it is all about.

Thanks, that does look like a reasonable option although I'm not 100% sure it will have all the feature we might want in the future. I've asked the author for a free trial or money-back guarantee before I part with any cash.

I'm also considering a script at http://www.randommouse.com - it looks great, but boy, it's pricey

    Hi Dave,
That is pricey, had thought more along the lines of what we have now and cut and paste on to a master page by category.

I've installed a test version of the 5-star script and I'm currently trying to get it working properly. It's going okay although there are a couple of issues, and to be honest I'm not convinced that it can do much that couldn't be done by just using this forum.

For that reason I've also set up a test forum to see how it would work as a review section. At the moment the only difference with the new forum is that I've enabled the rating system so you can add a 5-star rating for each thread (i.e. each reviewed item).

You can see the test review forums here. I'm open to suggestions for categories and other features. If it works okay I might be able to customize it further so it looks and behaves more like a reviews section.

Actually I think I missed something - I forgot to update the appropriate permissions for registered users. It's done now.

If you're posting a new review (thread) you need to submit the message, then go back into the thread after it's posted and look for the "Add Your Rating" button. It's not a very nice way to do it, and the rating button isn't in the best place for a review, but at least it's functional.

If we do decide to use the forum for reviews I'll try to make the whole thing a bit more intuitive.

After a long hard look at the available options, it seems like the forum is likely to best the best plan - at least for now. The specialist review scripts don't really offer much that we can't do with the forum, and if we keep it in the forum then we don't need a dual login system.

I've added the review links to the main forum page. Let's see what happens.
