question about headphones and tv audio mixer

I was told that I did not have headphones because they were not sure if the signal that was going from the mixer to the headphones was the true mix that is going to the tape. If they have the headphones plugged in to the phones jack, wouldent that give you the true mix (unless the pfl was on?)
    Your thoughts would be helpfull.

The best way to confirm the true mix is in your phones is to plug them into the record deck.
