    Tascam 244

Hi everyone, i've come across a Tascam 244 portastudio which i know nothing about, it works okay except for the tape, i have opened it and found the capstan belt has broken and is just bits of rubber stuck to pulleys, also the small belt is off and seems to be much to big.
Anyway does anyone know where i can get new belts and have any information on these machines ie age etc.
    Thanks in advance mick.

That brings back memories, I remember my old Tascam Portastudio well. Can't remember the model number but it was similar to the 244. I bought mine around 1989, so these things go back a long way.

I can't really help - my only suggestion would be to take to it a service shop and ask what the situation is. It's been so long since I had anything to do with tape technology, I have no idea what the current state of the market is. Maybe someone else can give a better answer.

I feel compelled to ask - is this really what you want? A reasonable computer with a simple multi-track application would be a lot better for most situations. I guess if you need to record multiple tracks live it would be more of an issue, but if at all possible I'd be looking to leave the tapes in the historical archives.

If you want to buy a new multitrack recorder rather than get the old one fixed, Musician's Friend is selling the "Portastud" (mislabled Digital Portastudio DP-02CF, 2 input, 8 track) for $280 and digital portastudios with more inputs are < $700 almost everywhere.

Thanks for the replies, as to is that what i really want the answer is no.
I don't need or indeed know how to use any of this type of equipment, it is just something i came across and wanted to know what it was used for.

I can't seem to find any good third-party information on the 244, but if you look around you tube there are quite a few videos of newer PortaStudios that should give you an idea of what it was used for (although the newer ones likely have more and/or different features).
