    How does my website look?

    Hi,

I'm curious to get different opinions about my website http://www.wildboar.net, which I've been designing for quite a while, but it's still not perfect. So, of course, I'm improving it from time to time, but what seems to you guys to be any major mistake, if any?

Well it's better than my site which has a flash map on it of where people visiting the site are from, and that's it! Apart from a header...

I did a basic check with the W3 validator, and it came up with 60+ errors on that index page alone. Some of them are 'obscure' and not actually errors in themselves, but there seemed to be a closed 'a' tag that wasn't actually needed (i.e. it didn't have an opening <a> tag). You can nab the results from below:

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...Inline&group=0

Hope that helped somewhat - they have other tools, for CSS etc, but that should get you started I guess :-)

same opinion of dimpi.. if you use some different colors (light colors) it would be more better.

Thank you so much for your comments!

I really appreciated all your comments, especially from lake54, which was very helpful. True, I never bothered to validate my HTML code, because I don't like that bureaucratic XHTML and DTDs. But I will check out your link and see, what I can correct on my website.

Further comments always appreciated. Every criticism I take as an idea for improvement. So keep them coming, thanks!

    No problem.

Again, I'm not really a web designer as such - I class myself as more of a site manager or I guess the more well known terms is webmaster.

I like to run sites rather than get into the coding - I mean, I can change code to suit a site etc, but I wouldn't really get stuck into creating a site from scratch.

File me under strange but true :-)

IE supports Microsoft extensions to HTML that aren't part of the W3 standards. Not surprising that a site would look fine in IE but not in Firefox or Netscape.Check the Firefox and Mozilla browser settings on the computer that's misbehaving. In Firefox.

Okay, I'm not trying to be unnecessarily harsh here, but there's a few criticisms I'd have to make from a design perspective.

First off, I'm not even sure, off the bat, what your site actually is. After drilling down through a few of your links, it appears to be a directory site.

This is related to problem number two: your site logo is being overwhelmed by the banner advertising. I'd consider running your logo and name right across the real estate currently occupied by your logo and the banner ad.

I'd also add some sort of byline that gives the visitor a clearer picture of what your site is about, such as "the sustainability web directory", etc.

Have a look at the media college home page. Straight up, there's the logo in the top right, and it always stays there, which helps the visitor to always recognise that they're in the media college site.

Not only that, but the home page has another, bigger, media college logo front and centre in the body of the page; this logo also features the byline "audio visual media resources".

What these add up to is that, straight away, the visitor is able to form a useful concept of what the site is about.
