    Shure 588SD

Anybody have any experience using Shure 588SD? Is it good for instruments, spoken word, vocals... (best for soft or loud voices) recordings or P.A. system?

The 588 is a general-purpose P.A. mic of mediocre quality. The 3-position switch selects "off," low-impedance balanced or high impedance unbalanced. It's intended for speech. At one time it would have been considered an okay mic for singing, but standards have risen. The reason for including a high impedance output is so that it can be plugged into a guitar amp, if that gives you any idea of the quality level they were aiming at.

Soft/loud voices, doesn't matter, any dynamic mic will handle a wide dynamic range. The limitation is the preamp it's connected to.

As far as instrumentals go, any condenser mic will be better. This mic will significantly color the sound. Whether that's good or not depends on what you like. No matter how colored a mic is, some people will always find that attractive. So you'll just have to try it.
