A boat? Hmmm, could be the white balance. Anyway, here's the manual:

    boat ?

It could be the internal battery is dead. There is a small watch battery inside the xl1 it lasts a long time but you only need it for remembering your settings. So if this is it make sure you look at ALL your settings before you shoot that crucial scene!

    Installing the backup battery
Pull out the battery holder from the base of the
camera, and insert the CR2025 lithium battery with
the + side facing upwards. Click the holder back
    into place.
When it needs replacing (or if it has not been installed), the "boat" flashes in the display. Remove the old
battery by pulling out the battery holder from the base on the camera. Make sure you attach a power source
to the camera first, and turn it off using the STANDBYbutton. This way it will remember your chosen
settings when you change the battery.
This backup battery allows the camera to
remember the date and time and other settings
when the main power source is removed. It has a
life span of about a year.

Canon XL1 - Camera mode not working

I got a Canon XL-1 with quite little use, the camera stoped working
on camera mode. I see the display on VRC mode, and it works.
But when I put it on camera mode the led goes on and off.

Is this a common problem if so what is it, and how can it be fixed?

    Thank you
