    ambient sound

Hi, I have to record the general sound of a coffee shop full of people while filming. What's the best mic i can use and where to place it?
    thanks

Do you need mono, stereo or 5.1? That will make a difference.

Hopefully you only need mono or stereo. Just about any decent quality general-purpose mic will suffice so I wouldn't bother buying one just for this job. Can you tell us which mic(s) you have available to choose from?

As for placement, try hanging the mic(s) from the ceiling or some other place where it will pick up people and other noises evenly. You don't want it too close to anyone or anything - otherwise those sounds will stand out too much.

    Dave.
this is the mic I have: http://www.akg.com/site/products/pow...ntry,ENUS.html
I don't need stereo. My question is: isn't it better to have a not so directional mic?
    Thanks again

Your D88S probably isn't the best choice (a less directional condenser would be better) but I reckon it's worth giving it a test run to see if it's good enough for what you need.

I've put together a quick page about this: How to record ambient sound. If anyone can see any mistakes or omissions please let me know.

Hopefully you only need mono or stereo. Just about any decent quality
