LaserDisc Patents

DVD Logo The technology for producing what would eventually become the LaserDisc was patented in 1961 and 1969 by David Paul Gregg. The illustration shown here is from the 1969 patent.

David Gregg's company Gauss Electrophysics was acquired by MCA in the 1960s, along with the rights to his patents and other optical disc technologies. MCA went on to develop commercial LaserDiscs in partnership with Philips.

A number of subsequent formats, including CD, DVD and MiniDisc, all include licenses for the original Gregg patents.
