Property Master

The Property Master is responsible for the props in a film production, and is often referred to as the Props Master.

A prop, technically known as theatrical property, means any object that is touched or handled by an actor (other than their own clothing). Objects that are not touched are called set decoration — only objects which are touched by actors are called props.

The property master must acquire all the props needed for a film and manage their use. This can mean purchasing, borrowing and/or manufacturing items.

Some prop items are not clearly defined and may or may not come under the jurisdiction of the props master, e.g. food or animals. Weapons often have their own managing staff member.

The property master may also handle any product placement requirements. These are commercial arrangements which require actors to use certain products as a form of subtle advertising (e.g. a particular brand of drink).
